Local Leap into Leadership Workshops
May 8 & 9, 2014 ~ Rawlins & Jackson, Wyoming
Just four states in the Union have fewer women in their legislatures than the equality state. Leap into Leadership, co-hosted by the Wyoming Women’s Foundation (WYWF) and the Wyoming Women’s Legislative Caucus (WWLC) annually since 2008, aims to increase women’s leadership at all levels.
“Nellie Tayloe Ross was the nation’s first female governor but she was also Wyoming’s last,” says WWLC chair, Representative Mary Throne. “I believe the participation of women in elected office elevates the quality of political debate and decision-making, and the Wyoming Women’s Legislative Caucus encourages women to run for elected office and expand their influence.”
Events Encourage Women to “Leap into Leadership”
On May 8 in Rawlins and May 9 in Jackson, WYWF and WWLC hope to encourage more women to take on professional and civic leadership positions at local Leap into Leadership workshops. These events will give area women tools to take on larger leadership roles, including information about local boards and elected positions. Trainer Shannon M. Garrett will use a nationally proven curriculum developed by VoteRunLead that empowers participants to network, seek local women mentors and build a coalition. At lunch, women will hear from local women in leadership that will share how they balance responsibilities with their leadership roles.
“Through Leap into Leadership, the Women’s Foundation works toward its mission of economic self-sufficiency for all Wyoming women,” says WYWF Program Coordinator Rebekah Smith. “Pursuing leadership opportunities often improves one’s skill set and salary potential, which is one reason why the Women’s Foundation is very invested in women’s leadership training.” More than half of the graduates of local Leap into Leadership workshops held around the state since 2011 said they were contemplating a run for political office afterwards, and 100% said they would consider serving on a volunteer board in the future.
